A couple’s dream to live a wholesome life inspires a community

Dovehouse-Organics---Farm-

Paul and Shereen Duncan started out with a dream. They wanted live off the land, raise a healthy wholesome family and live a more relaxed life in tune with nature. In following this path, they’ve also managed to share their vision with their local community, and to supply organic food to Midlands residents local to the Karkloof area through Dovehouse Organic Farm.

The Dovehouse is a thriving hub of organic living activities; from Pauls’s passion in the organic gardens with the organised yet natural layout of permaculture beds, to permaculture courses and other organic gardening and farming courses; to Shereen’s love - the organic food store and natural health shop, to the function room used for demos, workshops, and DVD showings aiming to engage and educate the local community about sustainable living.

Pristine forests inspired a deep respect for nature

Paul’s respect for nature was fostered during his childhood growing up in the pristine Karkloof area, rich in indigenous forests. While travelling abroad he spent some time working on organic farms and in his return to South Africa he undertook a permaculture course where he met Shereen. Paul’s father was a conventional farmer, and when the time came for Paul to take over the farm, he chose the natural, organic way.

“Our dream was to develop a small scale organic farm using permaculture design principles that would not only provide a healthy lifestyle and income for our family, but also become an inspirational education center where people could come and learn about permaculture and organic gardening / farming techniques. We also dreamed that our community would have easy access to organic health foods and products " Paul Duncan

To Paul, the biggest sin of modern living is that we toss our green waste into landfills, while soil is being degraded daily world over due to intensive agriculture. He’s doing his best to educate people about the importance of completing the cycle of nature by composting green waste and returning it to the soil.

Dovehouse a one-stop-shop for conscious living

One of the services Shereen offers at the Dovehouse shop is a weekly veggie box delivery to towns such as Howick, Merrivale, Hilton, and Pietermaritzburg.
