Keeping chickens in Cape Town

Hey does any one have any info / experience with keeping chickens in the city (well, in the suburbs at least). We're thinking about getting some laying hens to supply us with free range eggs and eat the scraps.

Are there any laws preventing this?

We have friends who keep chickens in the Souther Suburbs (3 of them I think) so it must be legal?
